Building Our Skills – Making Fenestration A Career of Choice (BOS) and West Yorkshire College Consortium (WYCC) – The Skills Service is offering Fenestration companies based in Leeds City Region (West and North Yorkshire*) the opportunity to develop their staff with partially funded Fenestration courses and qualifications.
Introduction
The WYCC Skills Service is a ESF funded, local government initiative to help upskill employees working in certain industry sectors and provides up to 40% government funding towards the training for the employer.
The WYCC Skills Service has a comprehensive list of courses and qualifications which are now accessible by any Fenestration company involved in window/door installation, fabrication and glass processing. There are varying levels of qualifications available to help progress an employee through and up to a supervisory role (Level 3).
The WYCC can also provide funding for other soft skilled courses for example; accounting and finance, business skills, computing and IT, customer services and digital and creative courses, to name a few.
All courses are partially funded and not restricted to SME’s or capped on the amount per company, albeit the funding support level is less on larger companies with more than **250 FTE employees.
Introducing these courses is a fantastic opportunity for employers to help their staff improve or enhance their current skills.
NB – these are not apprenticeship schemes, but courses for existing staff to get qualifications and improve their knowledge – it also enables those passing the course to obtain their CSCS card (issued by GQA Qualifications Limited – the industry’s awarding body).
Next Steps
The industry related courses are being delivered to businesses through an approved training providers, and those businesses interested in looking at what courses would be suitable for their business can either contact an approved provider e.g. Total Support Training or get in touch with a Skills Advisor from WYCC -The Skills Service to make an appointment and talk through their training requirements. Alternatively, BOS is happy to facilitate the meeting.
BOS is extremely keen to work with businesses who take up the offer of upskilling their staff and using the WYCC Skills Service and would therefore also offer companies involved PR and promote of their involvement through our wider audiences in the trade media and other social media channels.
Total Support Training is also offering several incentives, including free CSCS registration for staff passing the qualifications and other additional training for ***free of charge.

Stay in touch. BOS is working in other areas around the UK to help raise the profile of the Fenestration industry and promote best practices to those working or wishing to work in Fenestration. We have several initiatives in place which will help businesses to engage with their local communities to encourage young and new people to join the industry and help bridge our longer-term skills gap.
